Mt. Adams looms over the Hood River valley

Mt. Adams from Trout Lake Highway
Mount Adams is a potentially active[6] stratovolcano in the Cascade Range and the second-highest mountain in the U.S. state of Washington.[7] Adams is a member of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, one of the arc's largest volcanoes[8] and is located in a remote wilderness approximately 31 miles (50 km) east of Mount St. Helens.[9] The Mount Adams Wilderness comprises the upper and western part of the volcano's cone. The eastern side of the mountain is part of the Yakama Nation.[10]
Adams' asymmetrical and broad body rises 1.5 miles (2.4 km) above the Cascade crest. Its nearly flat summit was formed as a result of cone-building eruptions from separated vents. Air travelers flying the busy routes above the area sometimes confuse Mount Adams with nearby Mount Rainier, which has a similar flat-topped shape.
The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western flank of the mountain.[11][12] Although Adams has not erupted in over 1,400 years it is not considered extinct.

Native Americans in the area have created many legends concerning the three smoking mountains that guard the Columbia River. According to one of the legends, the Bridge of the Gods tale, Wy'east (Mount Hood) and Pahto (Mount Adams; also called Paddo or Klickitat by native peoples) were the sons of the Great Spirit. The brothers both competed for the love of the beautiful La-wa-la-clough (Mount St. Helens). When La-wa-la-clough chose Pahto, Wy'east struck his brother hard so that Pahto's head was flattened and Wy'east took La-wa-la-clough from him (thus attempting to explain Adams' squat appearance). However, other versions of the story state that losing La-wa-la-clough caused Pahto such grief that he dropped his head in shame

Mt Baker, (Koma Kolshan) revisited

A few more shots of Mt Baker area. I was walking yesterday, and from the hill above my house I had a sunshiny view of the white mountain, but ,,,alas, no camera, so I will attempt to get a shot for all to view this spectacle..when the climate permits...

and from wikipedia
is an active[6] glaciated andesitic stratovolcano [5] in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States. It is about 31 miles (50 km) [10] due east of the city of Bellingham, Whatcom County, making it the northernmost volcano in the Cascade Range but not the northernmost of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, which extends north into the Coast Mountains. Mount Baker is 15,000 years old, dating back to the end of the ice age: previous volcanic edifices have mostly eroded away due to glaciation.
After Mount Rainier, Baker is the most heavily glaciated of the Cascade volcanoes; the volume of snow and ice on Mount Baker (0.43 cubic miles or 1.8 cubic kilometers) is greater than that of all the other Cascades volcanoes (except Rainier) combined. It is also one of the snowiest places in the world; in 1999, Mount Baker Ski Area, located on a subsidiary peak, set the world record for snowfall in a single season—1,140 inches (95 feet or 2,896 cm).[11]
At 10,778 feet (3,285 m), it is the fourth-highest mountain in Washington State and the sixth-highest in the Cascade Range.[5][12] Located in the Mount Baker Wilderness, it is visible from much of Greater Victoria, Greater Vancouver and south to Seattle in Washington.
Indigenous natives saw the mountain first, but the Spanish were the first to record Mount Baker's existence. Spanish explorer Gonzalo Lopez de Haro mapped it in 1790 as the Gran Montaña del Carmelo, "Great Mount Carmel".[13] The explorer George Vancouver renamed the mountain for 3rd Lieutenant Joseph Baker of HMS Discovery, who discovered it on April 30, 1792.[14]

Mt Baker

This was taken last summer at Mt Baker North of where I live. Baker is one of the volcanoes in the Casacade mountain range. Another you may have heard of is Mt Rainier, which is south of me. One a clear day I can see both , and sometimes at once.
(one in my rear view window, and one out windshield...

And this is Jeremy visiting Mt Baker. Beautiful country around here. A magnificent place to live.
Of course now it is likely buried in snow, and ice, as we haven't had a very good year for snow, and I am not sure what the slopes are like this year.

Lotus

( Not my photo)
Since buying this  Moroccan bowl, I observed it was a lotus pattern, which initially escaped my eye, I suppose because I was so interested with the details in the pattern. I kne
w that Morocco was not always Islamic, but was curious about the motif ,and how long it had been used as a symbol of new life, so I did a little digging in the lotus pond, here's what I learned..

"Lotus is native to the Middle East, Asia, New Guinea and Australia. It is the most commonly featured flower in South Asian mythology and has featured in many South Asian religions through the ages.
OriginsLotus is native to Iran, India, China, Vietnam to Japan, Malaysia, New Guinea and Australia. It has been held sacred in Asia and the Middle East for over 5,000 years.

It has been cultivated since early times, for religious and ornamental purposes. In India it is commonly grown in ponds and tanks for its elegant, sweet-smelling flowers.

Lotus flowers have been used throughout history in South Asia and have been featured in Buddhist and Hindu art, architecture and literature. It was even a symbolically import
ant plant before the religions at the time of the the Indus Valley civilisation.

The flowers became symbolic of immortality and resurrection because people observed that they would grow from the bottom of dried up pools after the monsoon rains.

Despite its early use, it was Buddhism which first brought the lotus symbol to widespread use. Lotus medallions are prominent on the Buddhist places of worship at Sanchi in Madhaya Pradesh and Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh dating from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD.

As Buddhism spread from India to Central Asia and China in the first few centuries AD, lotus flowers were used to represent Buddha. They featured on rosettes, scrolls, motifs an
d iconography.

The giant leaves of lotus plants were used as plates in ancient India, and its seeds and roots are still considered a delicacy. 11th and 12th century texts noted lotus dishes and feasts in which lotus leaves were consumed.

The lotus became a common feature woven into South Asia's culture. This continued with the advent of Islam in the 12th century AD. Lotus flowers had ancient connections with Persian culture, so they were already popular motifs on Islamic carpets, textiles and architecture. They feature in intricate patterns on perforated screens, tiles and ceramics.
Furthermore:Recent research using carbon-dating techniques have shown that lotus seeds are "the oldest demonstrably viable and directly dated seed ever reported".
Scientists are now using evidence from lotus seeds to try to understand the ageing process of other species.

Important discoveries
In the 1920s, some lotus seeds were recovered from lake sediments in northeast China. No one knew how old the seeds were at the time, but they were planted and they successfully germinated into plants. But it was only in the 1990s that the age of the germinated seeds were revealed. Astonishingly, they were found to be around 1300 years old.

Image: Whole and sectioned lotus seeds housed in Kew's Economic Botany
Collection.
Scientists believe that this extraordinary ability to remain viable after so long is due to a special enzyme in the seeds. This enzyme is called L-isoaspartyl methyltransferase and is responsible for the seeds repairing damage to proteins within their cells before germination. This could contribute to our knowledge of the ageing process in other organisms, and scientists are following up research this field.
The lotus is one of the world's most celebrated flowers. From ancient times to the present day, it has featured in folklore, religion and the arts in one form or another. It is a symbol of eternity, plenty and good fortune. The flowers are widely used for ornament and as offerings particularly in Buddhism and Hinduism.
The lotus has great significance in the spiritual life of South Asia. It is a symbol of purity and untarnished enlightenment amid ignorance. Particularly sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism, it represents the concept of primordial birth from the cosmic waters of creation." .. more

"Lotus (seshen)
Appearance: In Egypt, two native species of lotus grew, the whit
e lotus (Nymphaea lotus) and the blue lotus (Nymphaea cerulea). A third type, the pink lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) was introduced to the country from Persia during the Late period. All three species were depicted in Egyptian art (the pink lotus showed up in Hellenistic artworks), however the sacred blue lotus was the flower most commonly used and the one depicted in the hieroglyph.
Meaning: The lotus closes at night and sinks underwater. In the morn
ing it re-emerges and blooms again. Thus the flower became a natural symbol of the sun and creation. In Hermopolis, it was believed that it was a giant lotus blossom that first emerged from the primordial waters of Nun and from which the sun-god came forth (portrayed in the image at left).
As a symbol of re-birth, the lotus was closely related to the imagery of the funerary and Osirian cult. The Four Sons of Horus were frequently shown standing on a lotus in front of Osiris. The Book of the Dead contains spells for "transforming oneself into a lotus" and thus fulfilling the promise of resurrection.
The lotus was commonly used in art as a symbol of Upper Egypt. It was often shown with its long stems intertwined with papyrus reeds (a symbol of Lower Egypt) as a representation of the unification of the two lands."

I finally wandered onto that last site with link to rings with all kinds of patterns and was side tracked, so maybe I'll return to this topic at a later date, if not, hope it has intrigued you a bit..

Ok, here is the lotus ring I found and a link to this incredible site, be sure to click on read more for information about meaning of symbols..

What they say about the lotus...
""Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus"

The Lotus flower is a symbol of the sun and of creation and rebirth. At night the flower closes up and submerges underwater, and at dawn it emerges and opens up again. According to a popular creation myth, it was a giant lotus which first rose out of the watery chaos in the beginning of time.

In the East, the Lotus flower is viewed as a symbol of spiritual enfoldment. The lotus has its roots in earthly mud, but as it grows upward in aspiration toward the light, its petals open out into a beautiful flower. Om Mani Padme Hum, meaning, "Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus" is the sacred mantra of the Tibetans.

The lotus ring contains the lotus flower symbol on both sides of the ring. The Hebrew engraved translation is: "Life flows within you and without you". This sentence holds the secret of unification with the One. When our false ego dissolves we enter the state of unification with the whole - hence life flows within you and without you.

Outdoor Art
Ballard has a little park that has these large sculptures. I've always found them interesting, so I finally photographed them all. Apparently, this park is moving away from the original Ballard heritage and some people aren't happy about it.

Leavenworth WA.

I got these soapstone hippos there this trip

I used to enjoy Leavenworth much more, but my favorite places closed up, so I pass through here, The States number one tourist attraction, on my way to Chelan or Winthrop.

I still enjoy the Jubilee Store tho.
Items from Vietnam, Kenya, and other places, and items made by women to support them and their families.
Women must be empowered if we're to have a peaceful existence.
I always 'support' these stores.

.

Leavenworth was a dying town, and the people got together, ( key word here) and made it into a tourist attraction of German design, selling German foods and selling German wares, as well as putting on celebrations many times a year, The next coming up will be May Pole day.
It goes to show how successful people can be when they come together for a common purpose.
We can make this world a better world, all we have to do is come together for that purpose.

Leavenworth is a huge success, a small town 3 clocks long gets packed many many times each year for celebrations.

Birthday Cake for a friend with a scandinavian invention atop that I got at Leavenworth's candle store.

Happy Birthday Age Of Aquarius!!! Feb 14th Spread The News!!

Happy Birthday Age Of Aquarius!!!

(of course, it can't be known for sure, there are other factors such as precession, but at least for a lark , since an age only rolls around once, (every 26.000 years) let me say Happy Birthday)

7:25 AM
The full moon is in Leo the 9th, and you should know that Valentine's Day is upcoming, and there are those who are saying it is The Age Of Aquarius beginning!!!

Harmony and Understanding..dadadadadada
You know the song..

yes, old Pisces is out, in with the new.
Just remember, in The last age of Aquarius, the Neanderthals disappeared, so it's time to get with the program if you wanna stick around!!
( Yes, I'm definately Aquarian, and we have those subtle senses of humor)

"In mid February, we are offered cosmic support to this re-membering of who we really are, by a rare astrological concentration that brings together a number of planets together with the North Node – denoting higher purpose - in Aquarius. And which energizes and inspires the possibility for transcendental breakthrough and healing.

We measure our global sense of both space (longitude) and time (universal time - UT or GMT) from the prime meridian located at Greenwich, England. We can perceive the collective influence of this momentous astrological event by looking at the alignment from this globally ‘centered’ perspective. When we do, something extraordinary and exquisite emerges.

At dawn on 14th February the day dedicated to St Valentine, the patron saint of Love, the Moon in Libra enters the seventh house of relationships. And Jupiter and Mars are aligned in Aquarius in the twelfth house of spiritual transformation.

Forty years ago, the intuitive words of a song called Aquarius, brought the dawning of the new age into our collective awareness:
When the Moon is in the Seventh House, and Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace shall guide the planets, and love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius ....

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more forces of derision
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelations
And the mind's true liberation

At dawn on 14th February the Cosmos actually embodies this perfect alignment to support our collective manifestation of love and peace and the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

The Aquarian chart of 14th February reveals an incredible concentration of cosmic influences blending with the energies of Aquarius in the twelfth house. Expansive Jupiter and energetic Mars are aligned with the higher purpose of the North Node. The presence of Chiron the wounded healer offers us the opportunity to heal the schisms that have separated us for so long. Neptune emphasizes collective humanitarian movements and the co-creation of social justice. And the presence of the radiant Sun enlightens the entire alignment.

Mercury also in the twelfth house but just beyond the cusp in Capricorn, allies with transformational Pluto to communicate and anchor the Shift throughout our global structures and institutions.

The Moon in Libra in the seventh house emphasizes harmonious real –ationships.

Venus in Aries in the first house energizes and empowers dynamic co-creativity.

And whilst Saturn the great task master in opposition to Uranus the unexpected awakener is suggesting an ongoing confrontation as the dregs of the unsustainable old paradigm reluctantly give way to the untested hope of the new, their placements in Virgo and Pisces brings practical altruism and visionary inspiration to the transition."more here
